Sculpture Plinth
Arundel

A four-metre high Corten plinth to take sculptures from local artists now a permanent feature near Arundel, West Sussex.

About the project

We were commissioned to produce this Corten plinth to take sculptures built by local artists as part of the annual Arundel Gallery Trail. Installed on the Causeway roundabout on the main A27 outside the town, it was initially home to ‘Waving Man’ by sculptor Giles Penny, whose work is also displayed in London’s Canary Wharf.

After the event, the plinth was occupied by one of our life-size, laser-cut ‘Tommies’ that we produced for the centenary of the end of the Great War.

In 2019, the plinth supported a sculpture by recent graduate Andrei Precup called ‘The Hierarchy of Worries’, inspired by pollution and the potentially negative impact of oil.

As with so many Outdoor Design projects, the plinth’s simple appearance belies our high-level skill and workmanship. We engineered the internal framework to ensure structural integrity; the fabrication involved 18 metres of welding and polishing to give our trademark smooth, seamless finish.
