Cylindrical Steel Planters, London

A collection of steel planters in various sizes, commissioned by a leading landscape architecture practice for a prestigious development project in Islington, north London.

About the project

Angel Square is a commercial development in north London. It occupies a prominent position above Angel underground station on the corner of City Road and Islington High Street.

Our commission came from one of the country’s leading landscape designers. The brief was for two sets of cylindrical steel planters: one group of nine to decorate a set of stone steps; and a further five much larger, standalone planters for various locations within the Square’s central courtyard. We were also asked to design and fabricate a shallow trough planter to sit on top of a curved wall.

From a purely technical point of view, this project fell well within our standard design and manufacturing capabilities. The real challenge was the scale. The nine smaller planters were each 600mm in diameter and 450mm high, while the five larger planters were 1.8 metres round and 840m high.

All the planters were fabricated in galvanised steel, and finished in a tough powder coating for maximum longevity and minimal maintenance. To achieve a perfectly smooth, seamless finish on the planters required hours of highly skilled, painstaking work by our craftsmen, who had to weld and polish 45 linear metres of metal.
