Wedgewood Garden, RHS Chatsworth Flower Show

Laser-cut stainless-steel components and grille for a talented new designer’s debut show garden.

Back to Our Work >

About the project

Commissioned to mark the 260th anniversary of the famous British porcelain manufacturer, the Wedgwood Garden was the first show garden designed by Jamie Butterworth. Inspired by RHS founder John Wedgwood’s vision of connecting people and communities through horticulture, the garden included a bridge as a central feature.

The metalwork elements for this garden were perhaps less about highly-skilled craftsmanship and more about our metalworking technology and the skill of our design engineers. The central bridge was a complex jigsaw of laser-cut parts made to tolerances of fractions of a millimetre, interlocking perfectly to ensure each individual component was precisely located. Once welded, the parts were polished to a flawless finish.

Using similar technology, specialists London Stone were able to machine the coping stones to ensure the bridge fitted together perfectly. This beautiful attention to detail no doubt contributed in some small way to the garden’s success.

We also designed and manufactured an intricate grille spanning a water channel. The parts were laser-cut in-house, then grained and polished to a smooth finish.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without our technology, design engineering and programming capabilities. We see this as the future of manufacturing in a world where craft skills are in increasingly short supply.

As well as a Gold medal, Jamie won Best Show Garden, Best Construction and the People’s Choice Award 2019 – the first time any designer has received four titles for the same garden at an RHS show.
