Livewell Garden
Hampton Court 2019
Large Corten steel water features and a precision fabricated roller-track system manufactured for the Livewell Garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2019.
About the project
Working with designer Aleksandra Bartczak of David Jarvis Associates, we manufactured two large Corten steel water features and a bespoke roller-track system for movable timber seating within the Livewell Garden for Crest Nicholson.
The curved water features measured approximately 3m and 4.6m long. Their individual components were laser cut before being CNC rolled to form the required curved profiles, then welded and polished to produce continuous seamless surfaces.
The seating system presented a very different fabrication challenge. Each of the timber seating cubes incorporated rollers which ran within a recessed Corten steel track, allowing the seats to be continually repositioned around the garden with minimal effort. As the required Corten sections were not available as standard profiles, approximately 20 linear metres of track had to be fabricated from 5mm plate.
The track required a high degree of dimensional accuracy throughout its length. Controlling distortion during welding was particularly important to ensure the track remained flat and the opening consistent, allowing the rollers within the seating to move freely and reliably.
The Livewell Garden was awarded a Silver Medal.
