About the project

The famous Maze is no longer the only attraction for visitors to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace in London. Opened in 2016, the Magic Garden is a family playground, with turrets, battlements, mythical beasts and aerial walkways.

We were commissioned by the Historic Royal Palaces, which operates the attraction, to fabricate metal covers for the porthole windows in the Discovery Tower, a helter-skelter at the heart of Magic Garden. Each of the 12 covers is unique, with a circular design inspired by the Palace’s Tudor architecture and the ‘Age of Discovery’, when explorers like Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh made their legendary voyages.

The covers, about 400mm in diameter, were laser-cut in stainless steel, polished to a high finish and welded to a stainless tube about 100mm deep that fits into the tower wall. Such a prestigious location required absolute precision in the cutting; we also had to ensure there were no sharp edges, since they are installed in a public space.
