Gaining the maximum possible impact in a relatively small area inspired this ingenious scheme that had to feature not only simple yet beautiful planting, but also seating, concealed LED lighting, and screening from close neighbouring windows.

About the project

In total, this project consisted of just one free standing planter and two trough planters, a relatively simple project. However, in place of conventional straight-sided planters, Clifton presented a design that featured stepped sides adding interest that made the fabrication much more complicated.

In addition to trellis panels to screen the area from neighbouring windows, access was limited so the larger trough planter had to be made in two sections. These sections bolted together on site forming a perfect, almost seamless join.

The trellis panels were made from a completely new woven stainless steel mesh, a material we'd had no previous experience of working with. This presented a number of difficulties in how to present the mesh and keep it sufficiently taught. We elected to secure the mesh in the base of the frame and then wrap it around a circular horizontal top tube that allowed us to gradually tighten the mesh.

Beneath the panels we developed a system of adjustable LED light holders that would project light up through the mesh. This design had to be totally flexible because at that time, we did not know the ideal light direction or distance.
