Peavilion, Seedlip Garden, RHS Chelsea

This imposing structure, made from 1,300 aluminium tubes, formed the centrepiece of the Seedlip Garden, winner of a coveted Gold Medal at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

About the project

The Seedlip Garden appeared in the new ‘Space to Grow’ category at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The centrepiece was the Peavilion, a shrine dedicated to all things pea-related. The façade, measuring 5m long by 2.5m wide and 2.5m high, is made from 1,300 aluminium tubes, each precisely 200mm long and individually rolled, polished and welded in place.

The tubes ranged in diameter from just 35mm to 150mm, and had to be positioned exactly to achieve a perfectly flat surface and conform to Catherine’s design, which required incredibly accurate placement and welding. The tubes were enclosed within a box-section framework: once painted pea-green, the completed structure weighed around 1.5 tonnes, and had to be delicately craned into place to avoid twisting.

Catherine was closely involved at all stages in the design and production. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, she said: “When I saw the metalwork for the first time, it made me feel a little bit emotional. It exceeded my expectations.”

This was one of the most complex and demanding projects we’ve ever completed for a Chelsea garden: we believe we’re about the only company in Britain with the skills and experience (and courage!) to take on such a challenge. But pushing boundaries and redefining what’s possible is at the heart of our business and ethos: it’s what keeps us ahead of the game.
