Aluminium Planters
Soho

Bespoke lightweight aluminium planters manufactured in 13 different sizes for a seventh-floor roof garden at Axtell House in Soho, London.

About the project

Working with designer Andy Sturgeon and contractor Willerby Landscapes, we manufactured 26 bespoke aluminium planters for the seventh-floor roof garden at Axtell House in Soho. The planters comprised 13 different sizes, with the largest measuring approximately 2.15m long and 750mm high.

A key consideration was the overall loading imposed on the rooftop structure, particularly as the largest planters were required to accommodate mature olive trees. The planters were therefore fabricated from 3mm aluminium rather than mild steel, substantially reducing the weight of the completed installation.

Using aluminium reduced the combined weight of the 26 planters from an estimated 2.8 tonnes in mild steel to approximately 905kg. The individual units were welded and finished to provide the smooth, seamless construction required across the different planter sizes.

Following fabrication and full pre-treatment, all 26 planters were powder coated in BRIG143 with a matt finish.
