The Tulip
Sussex

A 2.1m tall sculpture combining Corten steel and contrasting stainless steel finishes, fabricated for a private garden in Sussex.

About the project

Working with sculptor Simon Hempsell, we manufactured The Tulip, a 2.1m tall sculpture commissioned for a private garden in Sussex. The sculpture combines two Corten steel faces with mirror-polished stainless steel outer surfaces and brushed stainless steel inner surfaces.

The principal manufacturing challenge was achieving clean, sharply defined junctions between the contrasting materials. With approximately 20 linear metres of welded joints, particular care was required to prevent stainless steel filler material from extending onto the exposed Corten surfaces, where it would become visible during finishing.

The sculpture was fabricated using controlled welding techniques to maintain consistent joints throughout its complex geometry. The stainless steel surfaces were subsequently polished to their specified mirror and brushed finishes, creating a clear contrast with the naturally weathered Corten steel.
