Paddington
Bespoke curved steel planters manufactured in 34 individual sections, incorporating complex progressive geometry and concealed connections for a roof terrace at Merchant Square in Paddington.
About the project
Working with Andy Sturgeon Design and Frosts Landscapes, we developed and manufactured these bespoke curved steel planters for the roof terrace at Merchant Square in Paddington. The manufacturing approach was developed from the original design brief, followed by the production of a sample section for client approval.
The complete planter arrangement was divided into 34 manageable sections to accommodate manufacturing constraints, transportation and crane installation onto the completed roof terrace. Each section was individually developed, with no common components and complex progressive curves throughout the scheme.
The individual sections were connected using bolted joints positioned below the planting surface, maintaining the continuity of the external faces. A separate galvanised liner system was incorporated to prevent contact between the planting material and the finished planter surfaces.
Due to the level of polishing required during fabrication, a zinc primer was applied to the galvanised steel prior to powder coating. The completed planters were finished in Tiger Drylac 029/65650 Bronze Effect.
