About the project

Manufactured for a private residential roof terrace designed by Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, this bespoke planter system formed part of the second phase of a wider landscape scheme. The installation comprised a series of modular Corten steel planters developed to suit restricted access through the property whilst providing the scale and presence required on the terrace.

The largest planter measured over 3.7m in length and approximately 0.7m in height, with the width tapering along its length to suit the geometry of the terrace. Due to access limitations, the planters were designed and fabricated in modular sections to allow transportation through the property before final assembly on site.

A key challenge of the project was the development of the suspended central planter. Integral structural steelwork was incorporated between the outer planters, allowing the centre section to span whilst maintaining the clean appearance of a continuous planter arrangement.

The planters were fabricated from 3mm Corten steel and incorporated a 30mm x 20mm lip detail, drainage provisions and adjustable feet for final levelling. Following fabrication, the surfaces were shot blasted to accelerate the weathering process and establish a consistent patina prior to installation.
