About the project

Working with designer Matthew Childs Design and contractor Yoreland Design, we developed and manufactured a pair of structural steel frames for the Terrence Higgins Trust Bridge to 2030 Garden. The initial design intent was developed into a manufacturable solution before the frames were fabricated for installation at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024.

The outer structures were fabricated from 150mm x 75mm mild steel channel supported on 10mm thick base plates, with 7mm diameter reinforcing mesh incorporated within the frames to support the slate dry stone walling. The steelwork was left unfinished to weather naturally, reflecting the industrial character of the North Wales slate mines referenced within the garden.

The largest frame exceeded the permissible load dimensions for conventional transport and the restricted access into the showground introduced an additional installation constraint. The loading and delivery arrangement was therefore developed around these limitations, with a vehicle-mounted Hiab used to unload and position the completed structure directly onto the precast foundations.

The garden was awarded a Silver-Gilt Medal and Best in Show for Construction.
