Obelisk Sculpture
Surrey
Mirror polished stainless steel obelisk incorporating an internal water ballast system to provide stability without permanent ground fixings.
About the project
Manufactured for a private residence in Surrey, this bespoke obelisk sculpture was fabricated from 316 stainless steel and stood approximately 2.4m high. The completed structure was polished to a mirror finish, requiring careful fabrication and finishing to achieve the uninterrupted reflective surfaces.
A key challenge of the project was providing sufficient stability without mechanically fixing the sculpture to the ground. At 2.4m high, the obelisk required additional weight at its base while remaining completely removable from its installed position.
To overcome this constraint, an internal water tank was developed within the base of the sculpture. Once positioned, the tank could be filled with water to provide the ballast required to stabilise the structure without permanent ground fixings.
The water could subsequently be drained from the concealed tank, reducing the weight of the sculpture and allowing it to be relocated when required. This provided a removable fixing solution without altering the external appearance of the finished stainless steel obelisk.
