Sculpture Plinth
Arundel
Four-metre-high Corten steel sculpture plinth incorporating an engineered internal framework for the annual Arundel Gallery Trail in West Sussex.
About the project
Manufactured for the Arundel Gallery Trail, this bespoke Corten steel plinth was installed on the Causeway roundabout outside Arundel to support a changing programme of large-scale sculpture. Standing approximately four metres high, the structure was developed as a permanent installation capable of accommodating different artworks over time.
The apparent simplicity of the external form required a substantial engineered internal framework to provide the structural integrity necessary to support the sculptures and withstand the demands of its exposed roadside location.
A key fabrication requirement was achieving the clean, uninterrupted surfaces of the finished plinth. Approximately 18 metres of welded joints were required throughout the structure, with the external welds subsequently polished to produce a smooth and seamless appearance across the completed form.
The plinth was fabricated from Corten weathering steel, allowing the exposed surface to develop its characteristic protective patina naturally. Since installation, it has supported a number of different artworks produced for the Arundel Gallery Trail.
