Large asymmetric Corten steel planter incorporating varying heights, angled profiles and internal structural bracing for a courtyard garden in London.
About the project
Working with Wilson McWilliam Studio, we manufactured this bespoke Corten steel planter as the central feature of a private courtyard garden in London. Measuring over 3m square, the planter incorporated an asymmetric footprint with varying heights and angled profiles throughout the structure.
The combination of its overall size and irregular geometry created significant fabrication and structural requirements. Each section had to be developed to form the changing angles and elevations whilst maintaining the strength and rigidity required across the completed planter.
A key challenge was providing sufficient structural stability within the large unsupported faces. The planter was therefore heavily braced internally, creating a rigid fabricated structure capable of maintaining the specified geometry and allowing the installation contractor to concrete the completed unit securely into position.
The planter was fabricated from Corten weathering steel, allowing the exposed surfaces to develop their characteristic protective patina naturally following installation.
