Planted Structure
Cambridge Gate

Mirror-polished stainless steel columns, planters and a bespoke window box manufactured for a restricted courtyard space at Cambridge Gate, London.

About the project

Working with contractors Modular and designer Hodgkinson Design, we manufactured a series of bespoke stainless steel structures for a private courtyard at Cambridge Gate, London. The scheme incorporated two 5.0m high columns with a 1.0m high trough planter positioned between them, together with a shaped window box at first-floor level.

Restricted access presented a significant manufacturing challenge. Each column had to be fabricated in individual 1.0m sections to allow the components to pass through a domestic doorway before assembly within the courtyard. The first-floor window box required equally careful development, with its geometry shaped to follow an existing bay window and accommodate a drainage pipe, leaving only millimetres of clearance.

Before fabrication, a complete set of 3D models was produced for client approval, allowing the individual components and their relationship with the existing building to be established.

All elements were manufactured from 316 grade stainless steel with a mirror-polished finish. Particular attention was required at the welded connections, which were carefully dressed and polished to achieve continuous reflective surfaces without visible joints.
